The City-County Planning Department is responsible for land use planning activities that are subject to local review, applicable plans and state law, as it is enforced through local planning departments. The Department reviews these activities and makes recommendations to the decision-making boards or governing bodies. This Department administers subdivision regulations, subdivision exemptions and surveys, zoning regulations, Building for Lease or Rent regulations, growth policies, land use permits within the city-county zoning, any citizen-initiated zoning districts, the sign ordinance and assists in the development of other community procedures, policies or studies as requested by the planning boards or governing bodies. The Planning Department also assists on an as-needed basis with community and economic development efforts.
The Department also provides GIS services to other agencies in the county, including GPS of county roads, mapping, rural addressing and assistance with EMS mapping, as needed. This office has a large format copier available to other county offices and to the public for a fee. We also have a large format inkjet printer/plotter that we can use to print electronic files and aerial maps for a fee.
The Department is responsible for the County’s obligations as a participant in the National Flood Insurance Program. This includes administration of the floodplain program, review of floodplain applications for proposed projects within the regulatory floodplain, working with the Montana DNRC and FEMA on floodplain programs, and providing access to floodplain maps and assistance to citizens with floodplain questions and issuance of permits.
