The mission of the Justice Court is to administer and process to completion traffic, criminal, civil and small claims in a judicious and timely manner and to provide the State of Montana and the public accurate records and information regarding these cases. Sweet Grass County Justice Court and Big Timber City Court are operated from the same office. Jessie Connolly is elected as the Justice of the Peace and appointed as the Big Timber City Judge. Jurisdiction of JUSTICE COURT: Sweet Grass County Justice Court is divided into three divisions: The criminal division handles traffic, fish and game violations, misdemeanor offenses and initial appearances and preliminary hearings on felony charges. The civil division handles actions involving personal or property damages, contract disputes, recovery of personal property, interpleader, protection orders, forcible entry, unlawful detainer and landlord/tenant disputes. The amount in controversy or the value of the property cannot exceed $12,000.00 The small claims division handles contracts involving the recovery of money, recovery of specific personal property and interpleader. The amount in controversy or the value of the property cannot exceed $7000.00. Counterclaims cannot exceed $6500.00. Jurisdiction of CITY COURT: The criminal division handles traffic, misdemeanor offenses and initial appearances and preliminary hearings on felony charges. The civil division handles actions involving personal or property damages, contract disputes, recovery of personal property, interpleader, protection orders, forcible entry, unlawful detainer and landlord/tenant disputes. The amount in controversy or the value of the property cannot exceed $12,000.00 All violations of Big Timber City Code are handled in City Court.
